Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed a bill into law Wednesday night protecting in vitro fertilization (IVF) therapies after a February determination by the state Supreme Court led some fertility clinics to pause their procedures.
Senate Bill 159, a bipartisan piece of laws, was met with heavy help from state lawmakers and rapidly moved via the legislature to make sure clinics might confidently resume operations for IVF sufferers.

The law is designed to guard medical professionals from civil and legal immunity in case of unintentional demise or harm to an embryo following a ruling made by the state Supreme Court permitting three {couples} who misplaced frozen embryos throughout a mishap at a storage facility to file for wrongful demise claims.
“Unborn children are ‘children’ … without exception based on developmental stage, physical location, or any other ancillary characteristics,” Justice Jay Mitchell wrote in the ruling.

Ivey mentioned she understands IVF is a “complex issue” and he or she anticipates “there will be more work to come,” however the precedence was to “provide the assurances” fertility clinics wanted so those who paused therapies might “resume services immediately.”
“Let me say clearly: Alabama supports growing families through IVF. From protecting the unborn to supporting IVF, Alabama is proud we are a pro-life, pro-family state,” Ivey mentioned.
