Marlena Shaw, the voice behind the well-known tune “California Soul,” died Friday, Jan. 19 at age 81, her household stated.
Shaw’s daughter, MarLa Bradshaw, confirmed her dying to Fox News Digital, after making a video announcement on Facebook. “It’s with a very heavy heart for myself and my family I announce that our beloved mother, your beloved icon and artist, Marlena Shaw has passed away,” she shared.
“She was peaceful. We were at peace,” Bradshaw stated.
Bradshaw didn’t disclose her mom’s reason behind dying, although she alluded to hardships within the final three years. Shaw had simply celebrated her 81st birthday in September. Bradshaw instructed Fox News Digital that the household was “securing a date for her celebration,” and extra particulars could be launched when that was confirmed.

Shaw made her impression on the music trade as a jazz, blues and soul singer within the ‘60s, taking part in at small golf equipment. In 1966, she scored a gig with a Playboy Club in Chicago, the place she’d meet and signal with Chess Records. They produced her first two albums from a subsidiary.
