    Paul Mescal was cast in Gladiator II after ’30-minute Zoom name’

    Paul Mescal has revealed he was cast in Gladiator II after a 30-minute Zoom name with director Ridley Scott.

    The Irish actor is ready to star alongside Denzel Washington in the sequel to 2000’s Gladiator, launched subsequent month.

    Speaking to the BBC’s Graham Norton in regards to the casting course of, Mescal joked: “Ridley does not waste time.

    “I believed there can be digicam checks and auditions, however we Zoomed for half an hour, spoke for 10 minutes in regards to the half after which 20 minutes about Gaelic soccer, his canine and his spouse.”

    Mescal joked he had a personal trainer for the role “who circled me like a shark”

    Mescal continued: “I believed there can be extra, however he referred to as a couple of weeks later to supply me the half.

    In Gladiator II, Mescal performs the grandson of the emperor of Rome, performed by Richard Harris in the primary movie.

    Mescal’s character Lucius is compelled into slavery following an invasion by Roman troopers, and should struggle in the Colosseum as a gladiator to revive Rome’s glory.

    Asked how he acquired into form for the position, Mescal mentioned: “I ate a lot of chicken and lifted heavy things.

    “I was working with a coach who circled me like a shark… He went to city, and I noticed him on daily basis. It was enjoyable.”

    Another of Norton’s guests, Eddie Redmayne, also discussed his physical training for The Day of the Jackal, joking: “I profoundly disagree with Paul – it was not enjoyable, it was horrendous.”

    The original Gladiator made $465m (£358m) globally and won five Oscars, including best picture and best actor for Russell Crowe.

    Mescal’s interview on The Graham Norton Show will likely be broadcast on Friday at 22:40 on BBC One and iPlayer.
