‘World’s oldest fossil forest’ discovered on south coast of England | News

Scientists have uncovered what they consider to be the world’s oldest fossil forest – relationship again 390 million years – within the excessive sandstone cliffs alongside the Devon and Somerset coast.

The fossilised timber are palm-like in look however would have had skinny trunks with hole centres, researchers say.

Remains have been discovered within the Hangman Sandstone Formation close to Minehead, near a Butlin’s vacation camp.

This fossil forest is round 4 million years older than the earlier report holder – present in a sandstone quarry within the city of Cairo in New York State.
