To mark International Women’s Day, The Independent is bringing collectively a panel of specialists to focus on how police forces in the UK are tackling violence in opposition to ladies and trying to stamp out institutionalised sexism.

Three years on from the kidnap and homicide of Sarah Everard by Met Police officer Wayne Couzens, the panel will discover what’s modified in Britain’s police forces – if something – and focus on what work nonetheless wants to be accomplished.

Hosted by The Independent’s crime correspondent Amy-Clare Martin, our panel contains Dr Jessica Taylor, a chartered psychologist and the director of VictimFocus.

Our second panellist can be a fierce advocate of ladies’s rights. Harriet Johnson, a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers, is a founder member of Women in Criminal Law, trustee of the charity Women in Prison and usually acts on behalf of ladies in opposition to public authorities.

Harriet is at present instructed by The Centre for Women’s Justice in its utility for judicial assessment of the Home Secretary’s decision-making in regards to the Angiolini Inquiry into Met Police officer Wayne Couzens and the homicide of Sarah Everard.

Also attending the event is Ellen Miller, interim Chief Executive of main home abuse charity Refuge.

Ellen joined Refuge in 2023 from one other home abuse-focused charity, SafeLives and is a former director of Victim Support and chief govt of Empowerment.

The event can be hosted on Zoom and will final one hour. It will happen on Friday 8 March and will begin at 6.30pm GMT.
