UK Deliveroo and UberEats drivers to strike on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day meals deliveries are set to be hit by a widespread courier strike as hundreds of drivers from fashionable apps together with Deliveroo and Uber Eats plan to strike.

Delivery Job UK, a grassroots organisation with hundreds of members in London, has organized a strike on 14 February to demand higher pay and working situations. It hopes to spotlight the insecurity and subpar pay within the meals supply trade.

Those employed within the supply driver trade are labeled as self-employed that means their workers will pay them lower than statutory minimal wage- which at the moment stands at £10.42 an hour.

Delivery Job UK shared on X: “This Valentine’s Day strike highlights the growing tensions between gig economy workers and the platforms they work for. As consumers, it’s crucial to consider the conditions under which our conveniences are delivered.

“Let’s stand in solidarity with those fighting for fair wages and better working conditions. It’s more than just a meal at stake—it’s about the dignity and rights of every worker.”

In November the Independent Worker’s Union of Great Britain, representing gig economic system staff, misplaced their battle within the Supreme Court to have the option to unionise and cut price on behalf of riders, as they have been deemed not to be “workers”.

An Uber Eats spokesperson mentioned: “We offer a flexible way for couriers to earn by using the app when and where they choose. We know that the vast majority of couriers are satisfied with their experience on the app.”
