A uncommon all-white penguin has been filmed wandering in Chilean Antarctica.
Footage from early January exhibits the feminine of the Gentoo species, which is often distinguished by its black and white feathers and a white spot on the highest of its head.
This specimen recorded on the Gabriel Gonzalez Videla base is usually white because of leucism, a genetic situation attributable to a partial lack of pigmentation of the animals’ plumage or fur.
The situation is totally different from albinism because the animals preserve regular eye color, in keeping with veterinary physician Diego Penaloza.
